Globally-spread user base boosts opportunities for
online subscriptions to rich media
Haifa, Israel, February 19, 2002. SpeedBit
Ltd. announced today that 40 million users have registered
for Download Accelerator Plus (DAP), its
popular platform for delivery of rich media content
over the Internet, since the program was first introduced
in late 1999. DAP enhances reliable delivery
of software, music, games, movies and videos over the
Web, speeding the process by as much as 200% to 400%
according to users' comments and professional reviews.
DAPs organic growth is driven
strictly by word of mouth and user recommendations resulting
in over 70,000 users who opt-in and register the program
every day.
DAPs delivery platform is used extensively
by its vast user base, delivering 9 to 10 million files
daily. The program has been ranked among CNET's top
PC downloads for the past two years, further evidence
of DAPs popularity. DAP may be freely
downloaded from the SpeedBit website (www.speedbit.com).
Stepping-stone to Subscriptions for Online Delivery
of Rich Media Content
Owners of content software publishers,
record companies, film and video producers will
find an easy-to-reach market for rich media online services
among DAPs globally-spread users, claimed
SpeedBit investor Yossi Vardi (a founding investor of
ICQ, acquired by AOL in 1999.) DAPs client-side
presence on a vast number of users desktops may
be leveraged to establish viable online subscription
services, both eliminating the need to develop such
client-side applications from scratch and being able
to reach such a large user base with it already installed.
Moreover, cooperation with SpeedBit benefits content
owners and content delivery networks by enabling them
to make sure users are directed to the most appropriate
servers at any given time. This alleviates problems
with last-mile connections and reduces the cost of content
distribution, while providing the user with the most
efficient and reliable download experience.
How DAP works
On the Internet the same file is often hosted on numerous
mirror sites, such as at universities and on ISP servers.
DAP immediately senses when a user begins downloading
a file and identifies those mirror sites that host it.
DAP then determines which sites offer the fastest response
in relation to the specific users location. The
file is then downloaded through multiple connections
from the most responsive server(s). All this results
in an efficient balancing of the load among available
servers, and reduces download times for users while
allowing them to receive maximum benefit from their
available bandwidth, said Idan Feigenbaum, SpeedBit
Co-founder and CTO.
In addition DAP supports several user-friendly functions
such as scheduling, pause and resume.
Always Resume Features Extended
SpeedBit has just lunched an extended edition of its
Always Resume service, which allows users to always
benefit from the programs Resume functionality
even when the source servers do not support Resume.
This eliminates the need to restart interrupted downloads.
Always Resume now supports any type of Internet connection
and may be used to secure the delivery of much larger
files, in the range of hundreds of megabytes.
